Nestled underneath the Main Street Bridge—connecting Wilkes-Barre City to Kingston—lies the Susquehanna River. To Northeastern Pennsylvanians, this river is infamous because it has caused a lot of harm to our local homes and businesses in the past. Here in Luzerne County, we call this event the Great Flood of ‘72, when Hurricane Agnes left a dark mark on our community. This dark mark continues to this day; however, in 2007, there was an attempt to rescue the Susquehanna from its bad reputation. This attempt came in the form of the proposal of creating the River Common. Completed in 2009, the River Common is now a place to take scenic walks, runs, and have places to sit and look at the riverfront view of the Market Street Bridge—a historical structure in its own right.
